Tales of Ordinary Madness +

by Bates Motel

/
  • Streaming + Download

Includes unlimited streaming via the free Bandcamp app, plus high-quality download in MP3, FLAC and more.

This release features songs from both full-length Bates Motel albums; 1996's "TOOM" on Tomcat Records (also self-released with two variations on the cover and two different mixes) and 1998's "Super Chrome Deluxe" on Spinner Records - which never really saw the light of day. Story goes that John bought all of the CDs produced (after winning a lawsuit) and destroyed them at midnight in a parking lot in Mount Pleasant.

So ... a few are from a 1997 remix by Paul Blake / John Bates while four others are songs from that missing 1998 LP from Fiasco Bros with Len Osanic behind the board. At the very least it's a twisted ride through the pre-Big John Bates 1990's.

Hello 03:39
HELLO hello, hello, hello / hello, hello, hello I hide here every day I watch you come out to play If wishes came true I’d be with you But there’s still one thing I can do So hello, hello, hello / hello, hello, hello They are them and you are they But some of us don’t get to play Sticks and stones and telephones Ring on and on and I’m alone And no one knows So hello, hello, hello / hello, hello, hello Bridges bowing at your feet Leading you away from me – away from me My arms are empty, the city’s cold Locked inside its rigid bones – its rigid bones So alone Hello, hello, hello / hello, hello, hello I’m right here every day until they say my debt is paid But one day soon I’ll be with you And there’s just one thing left to do

I need some answers here and where the hell is Marilyn? I need a goddess near so take me fill me up with booze and tell me there is nothing to lose tomorrow takes care of itself and there is really nothing else ... nothing to lose I really want (I really wanna) I really wanna have them all I really want (I really wanna) I really wish this game was called (I wish this game was called) so take me fill me up with booze and tell me there is nothing to lose tomorrow takes care of itself and there is really nothing else so take me fill me up with booze and tell me there is nothing to lose tomorrow takes care of itself and there is really nothing else ... nothing to lose

asleep I sleep, I shiver and shake, my dreams are Koda-chrome I hope I die before I wake like Marilyn Monroe I found the devil on the beach, tanning as nude as Eve And I put that devil on a leash so I wouldn’t be afraid of sex, violence, money, guns and aliens X2 you can’t do this and you can’t do that and I will never be a beauty queen but I know that when you bleed you whine for company so that’s why the mirror's broken and I look like you make me feel and that is why the Jungle Room made Elvis kind of surreal like sex, violence, money, guns and aliens X2 so that’s the answer as I see it, then again it’s all I can see but the question isn’t what you’re asking and the mirror isn’t asking me about sex, violence, money, guns and aliens X4

Cemeteries 03:34
CEMETERIES not one more cup of gasoline in this linoleum cafe. just bring me a road and a tall glass of wisdom a lit torch of reason and off I will go. I'm wandering - through my memory I'm wondering - is this the cemetery ? don't send the limo or verbose functionaries, don't come yourself this has to be mine. I'm wandering - through my memory I'm wondering - is this ... don't tell me how you've lived in just a few short years, we've all been there before and you don't impress me dear. don't answer foolishly to words that you don't know, no story-book can save you oh why don't you go home I'm wandering - through my memory I'm wondering - is this the cemetery?

Broken 03:14
BROKEN crawling to you through broken glass is just a vision of scars and scabs cause all I seem to ever get is a broken back and a stack of debts and when I call you to collect there's an empty room like a movie set. broken mind. an evening fetish at its fighting weight I can't breathe, I can't breathe, I can't breathe and you won't wait I'm the broken teeth. I'm the gaping hole. my mind just snapped, too long alone? I've raped myself, has Mom come home? oh all I seem to ever get is a broken back and a stack of debts and when I call you to collect I see an empty life on a TV set. broken mind.

I'd like one last dance in the desert with you I'd like one last chance to see the sun rising with you The fading night draws us to dawn and exposes the view And I look down upon All that's left of (you) And the blood in my ears is all that I can hear And the blood on my hands is all that I can stand I'd like to plant a Joshua tree A monument to amaze Something to show the passion Something to cover the (pain) And the blood in my ears has become a definite roar And the blood on my hands won't wash off anymore I'd like one last dance in the desert with you But this is my last chance to see the sun rising with you

No Machine 04:06
NO MACHINE This planet of robots has been built just for you and you're the only one with your own free will. Every film and song is really starring you yeah you'll never die (Jesus was one too). And there has been no past at all in this universe just programs to make coming attractions worse. I am no machine - I love this disease VCR's and shopping carts are getting your attention so you can keep forgetting each new resurrection. And living with your morals (all that you believe) is unnecessary (there's nothing here that bleeds). So astound or horrify, pander or arouse, I anticipate sunbathing in your Hell. I am no machine - I love this disease I am no machine.

SKY-BLUE WATER I lost my mind today, it fled into the wilderness where the rivers spin in circles and the fish smoke cigarettes there is nothing left to me there's nothing left to find I pledge allegiance to the flag and to this strange electric sign since I drowned you in the land of sky-blue water when you lost your way home to me I find the chair and then the floor the window's hard tonight bleeding away memories, erasing so much time but once I visited a land of magic, light and grace I held you until you listened then you sank without a trace and I drowned you in the land of sky-blue water when you lost your way home to me another room is closing now, that sign lives on the bar no matter how close I get, I cannot touch the stars and when I wake up bruised and broken in some long-forgotten street I hear the call of alcohol and make my day complete since I drowned you in the land of sky-blue water when you lost your way home to me and now I'm drowning in the land of sky-blue water there's no other way to get free

FAMOUS MURDERS he stepped out into the half-light of the alley, the blade glinted in a well-kept smile swooning she collapsed, hair erect on her neck, as he devoured the thin river of blood several men waiting to connect become bloody silhouettes framed forever, on a postcard wall the infection spreads on out of the body the infection spreads out into the streets the infection spreads on into the bodies the infection has spread and we've caught the disease insane and crumbling in the bunker, a leader raised the pistol to the temple of his people lining up the crosshairs he framed himself with history, and blew a country's face into disarray the infection spreads on out of the body the infection spreads out into the streets the infection spreads on into the bodies the infection has spread and we've caught the disease trigger fingers are a cowardly distance, trigger fingers are a cowardly distance away

about

Bates Motel Vancouver, British Columbia

Bates Motel was the solo project of ex-Annihilator singer Big John Bates.

The band existed in both Ottawa (with 4 cassette-only releases) and Vancouver.

The TOOM CD sold 5000 copies worldwide, pretty decent for an indie (also released on Tomcat Records.)

A second album was prepared but John destroyed the entire pressing except for 4 songs which became the first 7" for Big John Bates.
